The TSRC is the largest Australian Government funded stand-alone road project in Queensland with 41km of roadway constructed. The roadway will connect to the existing Warrego Highway at Helidon Spa at the base of the range to the Gore Highway at Athol and bypass Toowoomba. The project will deliver improved road safety, reduced travel times, and reduce pressure from heavy vehicles on Toowoomba’s local roads. MES has been involved with geotechnical investigations for the project from feasibility stage to ongoing investigations throughout the construction phase. MES has provided geophysical services for the project to better understand the complex geology along the road alignment in difficult and challenging terrains for detailed geotechnical design of road structures, rippability assessments for road cuttings and sub-surface models for assessing ground stability on steep escarpment surfaces.
TECHNIQUES USED
- Seismic refraction to assess foundation conditions for 23 bridges and the viaduct
- Seismic refraction on 19 cuts for rippability assessment
- Cross-Hole Seismic Tomographic Imaging for deepest cuts and bridge abutments at top of range and viaduct interface
